DC won’t be accused of not taking advantage of a nearby Halloween release for this week’s titles.

If zombies aren’t your thing, DC hopes readers will sink their teeth into DC vs Vampires, a non-continuity maxi-series from James Tynion IV and Matthew Rosenberg.

I, Vampire has a message for the Justice League of a plot by the evil vampire nation to start a war between humanity and vampires.

Tynion and Rosenberg quickly establish this isn’t set in the current universe with some major deaths to kick off the story. One death felt somewhat cruel, but it’s in keeping with how writers treat this character.

The main fun here is deciphering who I, Vampire can trust. Like any smart DC character, he’s betting a certain Gotham City resident might be especially helpful.

There’s plenty of twists already to keep readers off guard and some surprising early vampire converts.

Otto Schmidt is well suited to draw this series. His style is a solid showcase for intense action and expressive characters.

With 11 issues to go this was mainly a setup issue, which was fine since the premise seems like it could easily work in the maxi-series format. This was a strong hook now it’s time to see if the rest of the series delivers.
