DC Comics reviews 10/26/21 – DC vs Vampires #1, Checkmate #5
Robin #7
Joshua Williamson has a pretty simple approach when it comes to writing Robin — let the characters in this death match tournament show off some fancy moves, maybe kill each other while Robin uncovers the secret of Lazarus Island. It’s a formula that has worked seamlessly for six issues and this one isn’t a letdown either.
Some writers overcomplicate their stories, but Williamson knows there’s enough meat on this premise to keep it rolling a bit longer. And this scenario puts Damian’s legit killer instinct to the test with an eclectic and interesting ensemble.
Williamson doesn’t drag out some reveals establishing an intriguing new dynamic for Damian and his friends.
In what’s become the norm for modern books, two artists collaborate on this issue with Gleb Melnikov and Max Dunbar splitting responsibilities. Both artists contribute strong work particularly in the creative layouts of the fights complete with Batman 66/video game effects for fight moves. It’s become somewhat frustrating though that the art isn’t consistent throughout.
Robin’s streamlined story and tone combined with exhilarating art make it one of a welcome new addition to the DC ranks.
