Static Season One #4
I’m a little envious of new comic readers who missed the first wave of Milestone. They’re getting to experience this fantastic rollout of Static like he was a completely fresh character.
Writer Vita Ayala is absolutely killing it. It’s a daunting task to take over Milestone’s flagship character and make him just as relevant now as he was in the early 90s, but Ayala has made it look easy.
Static is an ideal character to explore topics like police engagement, parenting children in the modern age and how a contemporary black teen would respond when given great power. Ayala also provides impressively authentic dialogue. Virgil and his sister actually mention drip, a modern term for fashion.
CrissCross provided the layouts while Nikolas Draper-Ivey handled the finishing art and colors. The result is a gorgeous looking comic with superb expressive characters, sumptuous and enchanting colors and action sequences that pack a visual punch.
There’s not a better comic featuring a rookie hero than Static Season One. It’s exceeded expectations and continually has me looking forward to the next issue.
