Writer Robert Venditti has done a spectacular job of capturing the feel of the Richard Donner Superman films. This issue, Venditti imagines a 2021 budget in 1978 as Superman becomes part of Braniac’s menagerie and finds he’s not the only Kryptonian in the exhibit.
There’s been so many Superman meets Kryptonian stories, but Venditti finds a fresh angle here the works very well in the landscape of the old films.
Artist Wilfredo Torres continues to capture the essence of Christopher Reeves’ Superman from the expressions to the posture. Torres’ Lex Luthor by Gene Hackman has also been spot on. If there was one weakness it was Torres’ take on Margot Kidder’s Lois Lane. This issue marks a major turnaround as Torres seems to have cracked the code and gotten Kidder’s likeness down now.
This comic reads like taking a time machine to the early 80s and being blown away at the creative direction of the Superman films. It managed to feel properly nostalgic and entertaining for modern audiences at the same time.
