(Spoiler) makes his Marvel Studios debut in Eternals — kinda
Here’s a weirdly intriguing spoiler for Eternals. Again this is a massive spoiler so consider yourself warned.
Last chance.
In the second of the two post-credit scenes, Kit Harington’s Dane Whitman aka The Black Knight has retrieved his uncle’s Ebony Blade.
A voice asks him “Sure you’re ready for that, Mr. Whitman?”
Since I avoid posting mega spoilers in reviews, I didn’t share my theory.
My assumption was that off camera voice was The Watcher from Disney+ What If…? once again blurring the lines of his non-involvement oath.
That was incorrect though. In an interview with Fandom, Eternals director Chloé Zhao shared it was another character entirely. Last spoiler warning.
“That was the voice of one of my favorite superheroes, Mr. Blade himself. Blade, Blade, Blade, yeah!”
Zhao is talking about multiple Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali, who takes over the big screen role formerly held by Wesley Snipes. Ali’s Blade will be directed by Bassam Tariq and screenwriter Stacy Osei-Kuffour.
This is a wild development as this presumably will lead to Blade and Black Knight teaming up. It’s not that big a stretch to see the two sword-wielders plowing through vampires.
Harington likewise sounds excited about the possible team-up:
“It’s really cool. [Chloé] texted me about that a couple of weeks ago and it sort of blew my mind. I didn’t know that that would be the case, so it’s pretty exciting for me.”
“I came into this knowing that there would be, hopefully, some cool possibilities for the future and also looking at the character and responding to the character as I saw it on every level, in every platform,” Harington said. “So yeah, this is a great intro into the Marvel world and I’m just very happy that this movie is the one that I got to do it in.”
It’s funny. In my Eternals review, I wrote the post credit scenes had me more excited than the film itself. That’s definitely looking like it will be the case.
