WWE Elite #68 King Mabel figure review

The New Generation was such an odd time to be a WWF fan. Most of the 80s mainstays were gone and replaced by occupational guys like trash men, farmers, race car drivers, dentists and more. There was still some good moments though. My guilty pleasure during this period was King Mabel. I hated the goofy, dancing Men on a Mission and really enjoyed when they turned heel with Mabel turning into a bully. His coronation is still my favorite because of how badly Sir Mo did his promo.

Mattel managed to get King Mabel into the Elite line and I already regret not getting him sooner as he seemed like he would have been a definite candidate for the figure of the year running in 2019.

Packaging:  Mattel adds a little twist on the familiar Elite packaging here with yellow/orange and blue accents to coincide with the Summerslam theme. King Mabel gets the first in the line designation and a fitting side portrait.

The rear photo shows him ready to squash his next opponent. His bio is fine although not very lengthy.

Likeness:  This is a tremendous likeness. Mattel went with an all new sculpt here and it is immense and immensely appreciated.

The sculpt captures King Mabel ‘s unique attire with the suspender front, shoulder fringes and baggy clothing. They can’t do this with every character, but King Mabel shows Mattel is willing to go the extra distance when needed.

King Mabel’s expression is good too. Mattel went with a more pompous, collected expression instead of an angry, mean one. And it’s a great head sculpt too. This is the complete opposite of the Shawn Michaels’ dodgy head sculpt scale.

Scale:  King Mabel was a giant at 6’9” and with his frame he definitely looks intimidating. That puts him an inch shorter than Diesel and The Undertaker. Even with the mohawk, Mabel is shorter and I appreciate Mattel paying attention to the scale.

Paint:  Ugh. I really dropped the ball on this one. King Mabel  features a terrific paintjob fully capturing all of his gloriously gaudy gold and purple attire. The paintwork is very sharp with just some few loose edges around the fringes. Even the boots sport a cool paintjob.

There’s two versions of King Mabel and I got the chase version. The regular version has a lightning bolts pattern and just purple fringes. In this instance I think the chase is much better and worth tracking down.

He has a red tattoo on his left arm that I can’t tell matches up with any reference picture. I’ll give Mattel the benefit of the doubt here.

Articulation:  King Mabel was slow and sluggish but he did have some power moves. Pulling off a belly to belly is not an option, but the eye-smashing leg drop is a breeze.

Mattel did try to accommodate some of his moves with the deeper hip range. And there’s no trouble pulling off a corner smash either.

King Mabel has:

  • neck
  • bicep
  • ball-jointed shoulders
  • elbows
  • wrists
  • wrist hinge
  • waist
  • hips
  • thighs
  • knees (double-jointed)
  • ankles

Accessories:  I’m not gonna complain about King Mabel lacking a ton of accessories — look at the guy — he fills up the package by himself. He does come with a crown. From my growing WWF king collection his crown looks new and it fits well in hiding his Mohawk.

Worth it?  I got King Mabel for $15. That’s a killer price for a figure of this quality. He’s the rare figure I’d recommend picking up even at the marked up price.

Rating: 10 out of 10

I dropped the ball here as this was an exceptional figure from Mattel showing exactly how great their figures can be in this format.

Where to get it?  I found him at Wal-Mart, but this was when they had the Elites well stocked.  You might find him easier at Amazon.
