DC Comics reviews 12/7/21 – Batman #118, Dark Knights of Steel #2

Green Lantern #9

Green Lantern #9

Like Teen Titans Academy, Green Lantern suffers from having too much story for one title. Writer Geoffrey Thorne is basically writing two titles in one with neither being especially well served. The first half of the issue, featuring art from Tom Raney, continues the John Stewart evolved arc where the former Corps leader learns of his power upgrade from New God Lonar.

Just as that subplot reaches its most interesting point, Thorne creates a soft cliffhanger before shifting to Sojourner Mullein confronting one of the terrorists responsible for the bombing on Oa. This subplot hasn’t been as engaging thanks to too much clunky magic talk though Thorne delivers impressively authentic dialogue for Jo.

Marco Santucci and Maria Laura Sanapo handle the Jo art segments. There’s a significant style clash from Santucci and Raney though it helps that Thorne writes this like a two in one comic.

John and Jo could easily headline their own Green Lantern title from Thorne, but this structure needs a shake-up so both stories can get more time to develop.
