DC Comics reviews 12/7/21 – Batman #118, Dark Knights of Steel #2
Superman Son of Kal-El Annual #1
Among the cooler aspects of Tom Taylor writing Jonathan Kent’s Superman adventures is the fresh take of Superman’s old enemies encountering his son.
None are more threatening than Lex Luthor of course and Taylor makes this encounter a memorable one.
To start, Taylor opens with a flashback of the Justice League battling Luthor. If Taylor’s attempt here was to make fans clamor for him writing the classic Justice League more often mission accomplished. Clayton Henry provided the art on this sequence with his signature energetic style.
Even if it’s just a brief six issue mini-series, Taylor and Henry on Justice League shot up atop my Christmas wish list.
In the present day, Jon and Lois have a terrific interaction with Batman, who has a present for Jon. Taylor gets the intricacies of DC characters so well that he adds in a small touch that feels so on point.

Steve Pugh tackles the rest of the art bringing his crisp, clean style to Jon’s face off with Luthor. Taylor immediately knows how to write a devious and calculating Luthor. Bendix might be a better main foe for Jonathan, but adding Luthor to the mix is definitely a smart play.
As usual, miss Taylor’s taken on Superman if you’re averse to quality storytelling. This was another fantastic issue featuring the new Superman.
