IDW – GI Joe: A Real American Hero #288 review
Like the Untold Tales arc, the Spotlight run is allowing writer Larry Hama to prominently feature some Joes that haven’t gotten enough attention lately.
This issue focuses on Lt. Falcon in his formative years before joining up with the Joes.
Hama provides some family background and Falcon’s incentive for wanting to be a Green Beret.
Just this brief insight into Falcon’s history fleshes him out more as a character and makes him come off so much more interesting.

Another benefit of these spotlight stories is it allows Hama to fill in some narrative gaps in his long established Joe mythos. Falcon isn’t the only Joe featured and this story is a direct prelude to events that played out long ago in issue #60 with some up and coming artist named Todd McFarlane.
The art by Kewber Ball isn’t flashy and is a little rough in some panels, but effectively tells the story and conveys the action sequences well.
Hama’s Joe spotlight arc looks to be just as promising as the Untold Tales. Hopefully he’ll continue looking at more underserved characters in subsequent issues.
