DC Comics reviews 12/14/21 – Wonder Girl #6, Robin and Batman #2
Black Manta #4
Writer Chuck Brown is definitely doing a quality job creating more layers for Black Manta with this mini-series.
Devil Ray is making his move while Black Manta and Gallous make a new ally who will hopefully help them solve the mystery of the Orichalcum before it kills Manta. This race against time is providing a welcome soft deadline and a sense of urgency.
Matthew Dow Smith’s art was choppy this issue with some pages lacking much detail and with more of a sketch style than finished work. The art has lacked consistency since Valentine De Landro’s break. De Landro also had a unique style, but it fit the flow of the book so much stronger. And there’s something weird about Dow Smith using Idris Elba for the model for Manta.
The art is somewhat holding the book back, but Brown is providing an intriguing mission for Black Manta that has nothing to do with Aquaman.
