DC Comics reviews 12/14/21 – Wonder Girl #6, Robin and Batman #2
I Am Batman #4
Writer John C. Ridley is setting the stage to move Jace Fox out of Gotham to separate the Fox family from the familiar trappings of Bruce Wayne’s world. But first there’s some housecleaning that needs to be done.
In this issue, that’s not the most exciting development as Ridley introduces yet another multi-billionaire character in Victor Noonan that’s designed a squadron of armored goons capable of taking down Batman. This could be more interesting if the Batman books hadn’t just wrapped up Simon Saint and The Magistrate. This feels way too soon to revisit that plot.
Jace’s Batman, on the other hand, still feels like his own unique character with a mission different than Bruce Wayne. This will play out stronger once the Fox family moves to New York.
The artwork from Stephen Segovia and Christian Duce was solid. Their styles complement each other enough that their work blends together smoothly and Rex Lokus provides vibrant colors beyond the usual darker palette of Gotham.
There’s little incentive for Jace and the Fox family to stay in Gotham and Ridley starts establishing those breadcrumbs in this issue. The Jace Batman scenes are engaging though Ridley is perhaps spending too much time on the rest of the supporting cast.
I Am Batman has enough reasons to be optimistic about its future, but eventually it’s going to need to start making good on its potential.
