DC Comics reviews 12/14/21 – Wonder Girl #6, Robin and Batman #2
Robin and Batman #2
The common knock on Golden and Silver Age stories is they’re too simple. They lack a sense of depth and complications. In the right hands, like writer Jeff Lemire, this era can be revisited with a slightly modern take that doesn’t kill off the fun and wonder with contemporary cynicism.
It’s Dick Grayson’s birthday and Batman doesn’t have much use for a cheesy birthday dinner. Instead, he decides to give Robin the kind of birthday he’ll never forget — a trip to the Justice League satellite to meet the JLA and their respective teen sidekicks.
In only two issues, Lemire has established a tug of war of sorts between Alfred and Batman for Dick’s future. Batman wants a battle-hardened ready for any circumstances soldier. Alfred wants Dick to enjoy this period of his life without the pressure of trying to be like Batman.
Hanging with the future Teen Titans is a step in the right direction. When Robin and Batman ends next issue, I’d love for Lemire and artist Dustin Nguyen to collaborate again on a Teen Titans book. Lemire has the Titans’ voices down perfectly while Nguyen conveys their personalities so well the dialogue is hardly needed.
This was a fun issue with an interesting twist.
Eventually, Robin would choose the Teen Titans over teaming with Batman and Lemire lays some seeds to show the genesis of that choice.
This title continues to impress and this behind the scenes glimpse of Robin’s early career has been a fascinating read.
