Marvel Legends Age of Apocalypse Build A Figure Colossus review

Colossus has maybe the most ridiculously awesome of all of the Age of Apocalypse designs. The crossover painted the gentle Russian in a darker light and along with Shadowcat, they trained the next generation of X-Men in Generation Next. While they’re not active members of the X-Men by the time Age of Apocalypse gets started, they’ve been longtime staples in Magneto’s army.

Getting Generation Next probably isn’t likely, but I was thrilled Hasbro decided to make Colossus the Build-A-Figure for the second wave of AOA figures. His design is so fun and with Shadowcat in this wave it made a lot of sense to add her husband.

I slowly built Colossus thanks to delays getting Shadowcat and Sabretooth and with every new piece I was adding, I was anticipating completing him even more. Let’s see if the completed heavy hitter was worth the wait.

Packaging:  As usual, there’s no package for the Build-A-Figure though I wish David Nakayama could have provided some cool artwork for Colossus like he did the rest of these waves.

Likeness: It’s Colossus has a very busy and complex outfit. Looking at it with modern eyes some of the design elements don’t make any sense — suspenders and bike shorts? Why does he have an armored shoulder pad? Gauntlets with Batman style spikes?

OK, it’s a bizarre design, but I don’t care as it just came off so incredible in figure form. Part of the charm of these AOA designs is how drastic a departure they are from the traditional looks of the characters.

Colossus is just a bunch of random design elements thrown together that somehow works.

The head sculpt captures his more extreme demeanor with a fierce gritted teeth expression. The half mask came out really nice with the furrowed brow conveying Colossus’ anger. I love the mask with the ties dynamically flowing behind him.

Studded collars are a hallmark of the AOA X-Men team and while Colossus doesn’t have it set up in the standard way, he’s got the circular stud pattern reflected on his shoulder pad. This shoulder pad strap intersects with the suspenders. They hang down loosely around the belt and gives this baggy and flexible visual.

I also love how the gauntlets turned out. Like the shoulder pad, there’s some wear and tear and a leather-like aesthetic to them. The elbow covering leads in smoothly with the strap buckles along the wrists. That’s repeated with the kneepads and shin guards with strap buckles.

Maybe the biggest surprise was Colossus isn’t just the Colossus/Juggernaut set figure with some new parts. It’s an entirely new sculpt that’s bigger, wider and more massive than the previously released version.

Generation Next artist Chris Bachalo drew Colossus thicker and more like an exaggerated tank than other portrayals.

Paint: For Colossus’ paint work came out very strong for the most part. The silver studs on the shoulder pad could have used another application or two.

Hasbro added some black around his eyes and it’s thisclose from being as precise with the black around his mouth. There’s just a slight bit of slop with the white from the teeth.

The red X on the belt could have been a little tighter, but it’s not distracting.

Scale: Colossus towers over everyone and he looks ready to stomp a lot of AOA characters.

So far, we’ve just got Sugar Man, but maybe more of the Four Horsemen would be welcome additions. Either way, everyone is going to be looking up at Colossus including the similarly massive Sabretooth.

Articulation: Colossus lacks the standard double-jointed elbow articulation, but that’s about it in terms of movement limitations. He moves impressively well and the suspenders aren’t as frustrating as I imagined.

The only trick is the belt buckle will unfasten when hitting deeper stances. His joints are tight and he’s able to hold dynamic poses with ease.

Accessories: Despite being the Build-A-Figure, Colossus actually does have some accessories. He’s got swappable fists.

I appreciate when Hasbro throws in a little something for the BAFs and being able to mix and match punching and grasping hands for Colossus is a nice bonus.

Worth it? The question with most BAFs is it really worth the price tag if you’re not interested in getting the entire wave. Given the AOA theme that doesn’t really apply here since presumably if you’re getting Cyclops, Magneto, Shadowcat, Rogue, etc. you’d want Colossus too.

Thanks to various sales during this Christmas/holiday season, there was Buy One, Get One 50% Off and Buy Two, Get One Free sales so you could get Colossus for cheaper than the $160 price you’d pay to complete Colossus.

Rating: 10 out of 10

I was excited about Colossus being the BAF for this wave, but Hasbro went above and beyond with the scale and sculpt with this take on Pitor. It’s a fantastic figure and really well executed to do his AOA look justice.
