DC Comics reviews 1/18/22 – Nightwing #88, Catwoman #39
Black Manta #5
Devil Ray reflects on his origin and the reason for his vast disappointment with Black Manta in the penultimate issue of this mini-series. It makes Devil Ray come off better than a generic villain with a weak agenda.
This was one of the better installments of Black Manta. Writer Chuck Brown seemed dialed in with Devil Ray’s motives setting him up as a viable threat to both Manta and Aquaman.
Valentine del Linda’s art was sharper this issue with very crisp panels and layouts on action sequences. One double spread featuring the Justice League was gorgeous.
It’s also been great to see Dr. Mist play into the mini-series. He’s been a long-forgotten hero and getting him back to some prominence is one of the best decisions of this book.
Brown and del Lindo set the stage for an exciting final issue with this one as the book finishes the groundwork for the big Aquamen event.
