DC Comics reviews 1/18/22 – Nightwing #88, Catwoman #39

Blue and Gold #5

Blue-and-Gold-5

After last issue with the reveal of Guy Gardner being one of the posters on the Blue and Gold message board, writer Dan Jurgens should have ended the board component of the series. It’s distracting and reads like it’s written by someone trying to capture the tone of younger people using social media.

Jurgens spends too much time on this component of the mini-series as if it’s the highlight of the reunion of Blue Beetle and Booster Gold. The duo has to deal with the fallout of their free superhero service and the return of Omnizon, who claims Earth is her people’s possession.

Rip Hunter makes an interesting, if ineffective cameo. The big problem with the series so far is Omnizon isn’t an engaging villain, and the story is starting to feel padded to make her a threat.

Ryan Sook’s artwork is solid with a strong layout flow and very well rendered expressive characters. Steve Buccalloto’s color work is also very good thanks to bold, vibrant color choices.

Blue and Gold is nearing the end of its eight-issue run. The characters remain endearing, but this arc still hasn’t felt like it’s gone anywhere even at its conclusion.
