DC Comics reviews 1/18/22 – Nightwing #88, Catwoman #39
Nightwing #88
It’s hard not to read Nightwing as writer Tom Taylor and artist Bruno Redondo’s monthly love letter to fans of Dick Grayson.
Whether it’s firmly establishing the relationship with Barbara Gordon, an entire gatefold ‘one-take’ issue featuring a chase of Bitewing or the unexpected cameos this title always manages to over delver.
This issue Dick Grayson is being targeted for trying to improve life in Bludhaven. Traveling as Nightwing is actually safer than his alter ego these days and when it’s time for Dick to make a big public proclamation, assassins are ready to take him out.
It only it weren’t for his blasted friends. Not that Taylor isn’t doing enough titles, but I’d love to see his take on the Titans, the Justice League and Justice Society.
And there’s touches that show Taylor is in tune with what’s going on with other titles as well, which can’t be commended enough these days.
Redondo’s artwork is top of the class right now at DC. His line work is so crisp, the little flourishes he puts on characters that really sell their personalities is always dead on and every page looks gorgeous thanks in no small part to Adriano Lucas’s colors.
I’m fine being totally repetitive here — there’s not a better title from any company that’s touching Nightwing right now. It’s the one book you have to get every month and it never fails.
