RIP Justice League? DC announces Death of the Justice League with issue #75
It’s a sobering thought as a comic book reader to realize gimmicks from your childhood are being revisited. When DC writers decided to kill Superman, it led to a creative renaissance of the title as it had grown stale after an exciting post-Crisis on Infinite Earths run by John Byrne.
That popularity led to DC deciding to do the next best thing with Batman and breaking his back. Knightfall was just as popular as The Death of Superman storyline, which played out through World Without a Superman and Reign of the Supermen.
Now DC is ready to revisit the reinvented wheel with The Death of the Justice League. This storyline will play out in Justice League #75. This seems like the next obvious clearing the deck move to establish the 5G JL of Jonathan Kent as Superman, Yara Flor as Wonder Woman, Jace Fox as Batman, Jo Mullein as Green Lantern, Jackson Hyde as Aquaman until Andy is ready and the nonbinary Flash, Jess.
The only reason this could work is it’s being written by Joshua Williamson and drawn by Rafa Sandoval, the creative team that collaborated on a stellar run of The Flash.
“We’ve been building to the Death of the Justice League for the last year across the main line,” said Williamson in a statement. “I remember buying DEATH OF SUPERMAN 30 years ago and now we have an opportunity to take that idea and go bigger with it. JUSTICE LEAGUE 75 allows us to showcase why the Justice League are comics’ greatest heroes as we show the aftermath of the loss against their biggest threat ever and its impact on the DCU.”

A new Dark Army made up of the DCU’s greatest villains has formed on the edges of the Multiverse and the best and most powerful heroes are pulled together in an epic war to push the darkness back. In the end, the Justice League are killed by the Dark Army with only one survivor to warn the remaining heroes of Earth about what is coming for them!
In addition to the main special acetate cover featuring artwork by Daniel Sampere and Alejandro Sanchex, JUSTICE LEAGUE #75 will feature an extensive variant cover program to celebrate the final issue of the series. Some of the top names in comics, including Alex Maleev, Dan Jurgens & Norm Rapmund, Mikel Janin, Tony Harris and more, have contributed variant covers.
Jurgens’ cover is a nice homage to his work as one of the main writers/artists during Death of Superman.
