The Book of Boba Fett – The Gathering Storm review S1 E4

The Gathering Storm effectively wrapped up the flashback portion of The Book of Boba Fett while setting the stage for the future of everyone’s favorite bounty hunter.

While recovering in the Bacta Tank, Boba reflected on his path after the Tusken Raiders were killed. That just so happened to coincide with The Mandalorian leaving Fennec for dead.

Boba really did just see The Razorcrest zoom off and figured he’d check it out. Later, Boba would reveal he recognized Fennec, but his immediate step was getting her healed.

Since Tatooine isn’t exactly overflowing with medic droids on the Dune Sea, Boba’s gotta go to a mod mechanic to save Fennec. The mechanic swapped out some of Fennec’s organs for mechanical parts then scoffed at Boba’s suggestion of closing up her wound. Covering up his repair work would be bad for business…

Boba proposed an alliance so Fennec could help him reclaim his ship from Jabba’s Palace. It’s amazing Bib Fortuna didn’t sell it or use Slave-1 as a tourist spot to bring in more income. Given the ease in which Boba killed Bib at the end of The Mandalorian, it was surprising to find so many guards at the palace.

Director Bryce Dallas Howard provided the first shots of the palace to really show its massive size. From the usual distance it’s shown, it doesn’t look that impressive. This episode gave it an imposing stature.

After some careful breaking in, Boba and Fennec battle through the hangar guards and eventually seize Slave-1. This is another interesting connection to Jango as he also valued having a bounty hunter as his closest ally. And unlike Jango, Boba probably won’t be launching any Kamino saber darts at Fennec. Especially with the way she fights.

MORE:

Initially just sticking around to settle her debt for saving her, Fennec decides Boba has an intriguing vision and she’s down to see how it plays out. First, Boba has some payback in mind.

The completely petty method of gunning down the Nikto Sand Riders that killed Boba’s Tusken Raider tribe was great. No need for a fair fight. They didn’t show the Tuskens any mercy so why should Boba?

Next up is a bit more complicated. Boba heads to the Sarlaac assuming his armor fell back in.

The Sarlaac isn’t a fan of uninvited guests and starts trying to pull Slave-1 down. This was a great shot and Howard set it up very well. Boba and Fennec have more than enough and unleash a mine to kill it. The Slave-1 mine sound effect is one of the absolute best in all of Star Wars.

Boba carefully climbs back into the Pit and is frustrating with his lack of success in finding his armor. This seemed to be some very confusing logic. Knowing he’s on Tatooine, shouldn’t Boba’s first, second and third thought be that Jawas stole and sold it?

Fennec is down to be Boba’s partner in taking over Jabba’s territory neatly wrapping a bow on how they became aligned and ultimately connecting with Mando.

Back at the present day, Boba realizes he still needs some muscle and recruits Black Krrsantan. He was at Garsa Fwip’s club and getting annoyed at some of the winner gamblers. Garsa tried to get him to calm down, which led to him only ripping one arm off. It was worth a shot.

Krrsantan is down for Boba’s offer to be one of his enforcers, just in time for Boba to call the other Tatooine crime lords. They’re pretty mouthy until Boba’s Rancor makes its presence known. That’s a very subtle threat that carries a lot of meaning.

The crime lords don’t want to partner with Boba to take out the Pyke Syndicate, but they won’t interfere either. The odds of that remaining the case seem slim.

Fennec mentioned with enough money, Boba can buy muscle — if he knows where to look. It probably wasn’t a coincidence that The Mandalorian theme played again, right? Well, Boba and Fennec showed up on The Mandalorian so it’s only right that he returns the favor.

If that is what we’re actually getting, I can’t wait. It was nice to fill in the remaining story gaps and now the stage is fully set for Boba and Fennec’s masterplan to come into effect.
