DC Comics reviews 1/25/22 – Action Comics #1039, Robin #10
Action Comics #1039
If there were an award for a writer making the absolute best of a terrible position it would have to go to Phillip Kennedy Johnson. Johnson is crafting an amazing Superman story in an era where Clark Kent has been pushed out of the spotlight and off planet. Better than killing him, but Superman had been one of the strongest DC books since Rebirth began.
Johnson has done commendable work restoring the luster to The Man of Steel after the highly destructive Brian Michael Bendis run. In this latest chapter of Superman’s stint on Warworld, Kal-El is still searching for a way to free the thousands of enslaved Mongul has gathered across the universe. Johnson truly captures Superman’s voice. It’s frustrating to think how much better Superman would be positioned right now if Johnson hadn’t followed Patrick Gleason & Peter Tomasi and Dan Jurgens instead of Bendis.
Artist Riccardo Federici has a gorgeous style that works best with fantasy and sci-fi backdrops like Atlantis in Aquaman or Warworld. The art is captivating with Federici’s strong command of character expression and the smooth coloring from Lee Loughridge.
Despite the bleak setup for The Warworld Saga, Johnson is delivering what seems destined to be a fondly remembered arc and storyline. It’s the ideal scenario for Superman, but Johnson and his writers are making it a must-read.
The Martian Manhunter back-up by writer Shawn Aldrige and artist Adriana Melo has been superb. It’s arguably the most effective of the bonus back-up stories in any DC title right now. Aldrige has a strong handle on J’onn’s demeanor and personality as well as what sets him apart from other heroes.
Melo’s artwork is a great fit for Martian Manhunter. Along with Hi-Fi’s coloring, this would be a firm creative team for a Manhunter ongoing series.
