DC Comics reviews 1/25/22 – Action Comics #1039, Robin #10
Teen Titans Academy #11
The cover promising that Red X would be revealed had some traces of desperation. Especially since writer Tim Sheridan still doesn’t reveal the identity of the book’s main character.
The Titans scramble to stop some new threat from a seemingly super-powered Red X who remains a match for the entire veteran team.
Sheridan isn’t doing a great job of explaining how Red X is able to battle the Titans comprised of Nightwing, Donna Troy, Cyborg, Starfire, Raven, The Flash and Beast Boy at bay while something happens with Nevermore.
Meanwhile, Titans Tower is on the verge of collapsing and the Academy members rally to keep it upright. It’s not clear which Academy members are doing what since they’re largely exhibiting powers they haven’t utilized previously. At least the arrival of Shazam and Black Adam feels connected and meaningful to the Shazam mini-series, which prominently featured Dane.
Rafa Sandoval (with inker Jordi Tarragona) and Brent Peeples team up on the art. This was a big week for Peeples, who also collaborated on The Flash. It feels unfair to keep piling on Peeples, who is a capable artist, but is paired with artist that aren’t a great stylistic fit. This issue doesn’t get the benefit of an alternate subplot for Peeples to handle exclusively.
TTA is resorting to false advertising for an issue that has a lot happening yet lacks much impact. It’s time for Sheridan to start making some meaningful reveals otherwise the goodwill of following these characters will be exhausted sooner than later.
