The Book of Boba Fett: Return of The Mandalorian review

It was hard to decide if this week’s episode of The Book of Boba Fett was a very fun installment of the OG bounty hunter’s show or a great first episode of The Mandalorian’s third season.

Regardless, Return of The Mandalorian was a tremendous episode and packed with some of the most effective and entertaining action in either series.

Fennec teased tracking down Din Djarin aka The Mandalorian and he’s back to his old tricks tracking down a bounty. While he’s short one adorably cute sidekick, Mando does have a hew addition to his arsenal — the Darksaber.

Only catch is Mando still hasn’t quite mastered it and injures his leg badly while collecting his bounty…or at least his head.

This was actually cool to see to show how a novice saber user could nearly do as much damage to themselves as their opponent. The payoff this time wasn’t just money, but info on the location of his remaining clan members.

There’s not much left though as it’s just The Armorer and Paz Viszla, the heavy machine gunner. That might prove to be enough as The Armorer helps Mando train in the use of the Darksaber.

The Armorer isn’t keen on Mando’s beskar spear since that could be used to harm Mandalorians and wants to repurpose it. He’s fine with melting it down, but wants it used for armor for his pal Grogu.

She also offers some background on the Darksaber, which makes for an epic look at the fall of Mandalore.

MORE:

Director Bryce Dallas Howard staged a truly nightmarish flashback with the Imperial siege of Mandalore. Imperial Probe Droids lit the sky through the explosions and Imperial Security guards marching through the carnage like T-800s.

Bo-Katan was a precautionary tale of taking the Darksaber without winning it in combat. Paz Viszla wants to restore his family’s honor and regain the Darksaber once held by his ancestor.

Pre Vizsla was a fantastic character in The Clone Wars voiced by series writer Jon Favreau. Mando accepts the challenge and manages to defeat Paz only to not be able to recite the Mandalorian creed of never removing his helmet.

Seems wild that a clan of two would be picky about membership at this stage, but this is the way. Mando leaves that planet and heads to Tatooine to visit an old friend.

Peli Motto found a ship that Mando might be able to use as a replacement for The Razorcrest. Among Peli’s droids is a very familiar looking one she actually BD like Cal Kestis’ sidekick in Jedi: Fallen Order (check it out for PS4 on Amazon) She might have oversold it as it’s just a Naboo cruiser. In fairness, it is wizard!

While ferrying bounties might get tricky, it beats flying coach and having to check his weapons. Clearly the Republic airways are much smoother than anything in the States. You just knew his Darksaber and weapons ‘suitcase’ was going to be headed to Bespin.

After a little more convincing, Mando is fine with using the cruiser…temporarily. Until Peli can track down a Razorcrest for him. First, it’s time for a joyride that brings him on the same flight path as a familiar X-Wing pilot, Captain Carson Teva (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee). Teva recognizes the voice and wants to chat, but Mando doesn’t want to discuss that destroyed Imperial outpost.

Back at Peli’s hanger, Mando is shocked to hear a friend stopped by. Not like he’s a got a bunch especially after one got herself cancelled. Fennec hops down and says Boba needs some help. Mando doesn’t need a payday for this one — he owes Boba after all. But first, he’s got to visit…an old (young) friend.

There’s been some fun episodes of The Book of Boba Fett, but it was interesting how the standout episode of the season featured The Mandalorian. Is it time to start the countdown for season 3 already?
