Superman Son of Kal-El #8

Superman Son of Kal-El-#8

This was a rare off issue for the title as writer Tom Taylor wrapped the second chapter of The Rising. Bendix’s Gamorra Corprs continue antagonizing a leviathan unwittingly charging to Metropolis.

With Jackson Hyde’s help, Jonathan is able to stem the massive damage even while the Gamorra Corps seek to discredit him. Maybe the biggest problem with the issue is Taylor had Jay narrate the event after the fact so there wasn’t a ton of suspense in the outcome. It all felt too matter of fact and lacked that feeling that anything could happen.

Cian Tormey’s artwork didn’t quite gel with the art style that’s previously been established on the book either. Tormey is a solid artist, just not well suited for Superman’s adventures. Next issue, Taylor teams with his Nightwing artist Bruno Redondo guaranteeing that the bar will be raised considerably.

This was an unusual skippable issue though the two-parter with Nightwing should likely find the title on much stronger footing next month.
