DC Comics review 2/15/22 – Nightwing #89, Detective Comics #1053
Aquaman The Becoming #6
The finale of Aquaman The Becoming does a solid job of setting the foundation for Jackson Hyde to also be called Aquaman.
For much of the issue, writer Brandon Thomas explores Jackson’s doubts and insecurities about the title Aquaman.
The main problem, similar to I Am Batman, is why Jackson would want the title Aquaman instead of establishing his own identity. Arthur doesn’t make the strongest argument for why Jackson should share the title either.
Thomas does include some exciting action sequences as Jackson and his sister, Delilah, and mother attempt to save Mera.
Artists Serg Acuna and Diego Olertegui provide lush underwater clashes with a good sense of movement and extra detail to how hair would flow in the sea. Inkers Acuna and Wade Von Grawbadger do excellent work making the art pop while colorist Adriano Lucas utilizes gorgeous combinations.
Aquaman The Becoming ends on an intentionally open-ended note as it feeds in to Aquamen. Given the fate of Arthur coming shortly in Dark Crisis, it’s a good thing Jackson is being groomed for the role. This mini-series delivered on that foundation with some intriguing directions going forward.
