DC Comics review 2/15/22 – Nightwing #89, Detective Comics #1053
Detective Comics #1053
Just when it felt like The Tower main story of this weekly arc was losing steam, writer Mariko Tamaki gets things back on track.
Tamaki kept the momentum surging as Nightwing began getting repeated news that “his hold is breaking.” This is in reference to Psycho Pirate, but the Bat Family has to start from scratch and consider all the potential mind controlling villains.
Meanwhile, Dr. Wear is frustrating his allies, who are considering taking him off the board permanently. And as the Bat Family closes in on Psycho Pirate, another threat is closing in on them.
Tamaki definitely made this feel like the build to the final act. Artist Max Raynor was more than game for delivering some intense visuals and dramatic conversations. Luis Guerrero’s strong color work is a nice contrast to this increasingly darker story.
In the secondary story, Bane encounters the troubled, mysterious youth in a timeframe that seems to suggest it’s playing out during Knightfall.
Writer Matthew Rosenberg has been quietly folding in some significant Batman history in this arc. Fernando Blanco’s artwork remains dark and haunting with an intimidating portrayal of Bane. Jordie Bellaire’s colors helps further establish the dark mood.
This weekly arc has been the best approach for Detective Comics in months. It’s been a gripping story with two captivating and engaging stories that look to be building to a memorable conclusion.
Rating: 9.5 out of 10
