IDW reviews 2/16/22 – GI Joe – A Real American Hero: Saturday Morning Adventures #1

For any fan who made tuning in to G.I. Joe A real American Hero a daily ritual, G.I. Joe A Real American Hero Saturday Morning Adventures is a can’t miss nostalgia blast.

Maybe the only thing missing is the iconic soundtrack and sound effects.

Writer Erik Burnham clearly was a fan of the property and has the tone down in a way to make longtime Joe fans smile. The dialogue is spot on from the clique nature of Cobra command with Destro and Baroness sniping at Zartan and his Dreadnoks or Alpine’s comedic exchanges with Bazooka.

Burnham has every character’s voice down and as a result it’s not difficult at all hearing Michael Bell, Christopher Collins, Arthur Burghardt, Frank Walker, Bill Ratner, Mary McDonald-Lewis, etc. while reading the lines.

Dan Schoening mirrors the art style of the cartoon wonderfully. That sounds easy given the simpler style or the series but keeping that consistent in a comic has been attempted before and rarely this clean.

Luis Antonio Delgado’s colors reflect the vibrancy of the show beautifully giving that 80s pop to the pages.

Cobra Commander gets the means to finally conquer the world and starts off by making Mega-BATS. To show the world he means business, Cobra Commander dispatches three of the BATS to different corners of the world.

In classic mini-series cartoon fashion that means the Joes have to split up to stop them.

This is a near perfect time capsule take on the beloved cartoon series that feels like a promising start to another wild five-episode mini-series. Complete bias included this is already looking like one of my favorite comics in 2022.
