DC Comic reviews 2/22/22 – Task Force Z #5, Robin #11
Aquamen #1
It’s tough to get invested in a new Aquaman series. Like Hawkman, Green Arrow, Atom and Martian Manhunter, Aquaman series post Flashpoint don’t tend to have a lengthy run.
With Aquamen, writers Chuck Brown and Brandon Thomas are trying to (pun fully intended) turn back the tides of reader apathy on yet another Aquaman title. This is harder knowing Dark Crisis is looming and the dual Aquamen gimmick isn’t too long regardless.
Yet with all that insight, it’s hard not to get pulled into this opening act where Atlanteans expatriates suddenly remember their heritage with frequently violent results.
Readers of Aquaman The Becoming and Black Manta will be rewarded while newcomers won’t be left behind too long.
Artist Sami Basri has a lively, energetic style that delivers engaging action and sells the emotional drama appropriately.
This was a solid debut issue and one that suggests for as long as it lasts, this could be a fun ride of the Aquamen.
