DC Comics reviews 3/8/22 – Superman Son of Kal-El #9, The Joker #13

I Am Batman #7

The move to New York is doing wonders for this title. Jace Fox doesn’t feel like a pretender to an unearned throne in Gotham and can instead be the crime fighting force in the Bug Apple.

Writer John Ridley’s decision to have Batman partner with a Bat-friendly police task force was also savvy. It sets up a ready-made supporting cast that is determining if they can work alongside Batman.

Ridley also uses the title to have Jace approach crime fighting from a different manner where the wealthy victims don’t immediately take precedent over others.

The only aspect that still feels underdeveloped is the Fox family subplots. Ridley isn’t providing enough time for their scenes to be meaningful, but they’re also proving to be a distraction from the more exciting action.

Christian Duce provided the art this issue. The title has been missing an artist identity. Hopefully that ends with Duce, whose dynamic style is an excellent fit for the series.

This is the best the book has looked since its inception. Rex Lokus’ colors are piercing providing bold lights through the bleak darkness.

I Am Batman keeps improving. Ridley is starting to find the ideal approach to make Jace’s Batman stand on his own and it’s making for a vastly more interesting read.
