Supergirl: The Sixth and Final Season Blu-Ray review
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-Ray I reviewed in this blog post. The opinions I share are my own.
After a longer than anticipated hiatus, Supergirl wrapped its sixth and final season. Like many of the Arrowverse shows, Supergirl was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The series was doubly affected as star Melissa Benoist’s pregnancy also delayed the season.
The show hit its peak with the third and fourth season. In those respective seasons, Supergirl faced off with Reign, essentially her equivalent to Doomsday, and Lex Luthor (an inspired Jon Cryer).
For the final two seasons, the writers opted to use Supergirl’s platform as a means to call attention to women’s rights, equality, race relations, personal freedom and LGBTQ+ rights. Those issues would benefit from a high-profile series spotlighting them, but Supergirl’s writing team lacked the subtlety to take these plot points seriously.
In season 6, Supergirl contends with Nyxly, another a fifth dimensional imp like Mr. Mxyzptlk. There’s a bit more personal stake as Kara’s father and brother banished Nyxly to The Phantom Zone. Supergirl spent some time in the Zone as well and when Kara escaped, Nyxly seized the opportunity to break free.
Kara’s Super Friends continued to be a major factor. The series continued the frustrating Arrowverse trend of making all of the supporting characters superheroes to some extent. Easily the most disappointing was making Lena Luthor a witch. As usual the arrival of the Legion of Super Heroes felt underwhelming as the writers never quite grasped the concept of a “legion” being more than three characters.
In a nice touch, the series finale saw the return of most of the original core characters. The show definitely went through massive changes from the first one that aired on CBS. More than any other Arrowverse, Supergirl’s supporting cast was a major component of the show at times to the detriment of a series about Supergirl. The finale does give them all the happy ending fans expected.
With the Arrowverse feeling oddly less connected after Crisis on Infinite Earths, Supergirl’s farewell comes at an odd time. In a homage to Brian Michael Bendis’ comic book arc, The Truth, during his run on Superman, Kara reveals her dual identity to the world.
That’s an interesting decision for the final season and one that might have provided opportunities for stronger stories in a subsequent season. And much like Bendis’ questionable status quo upending decision, there’s no repercussions for Kara reporting on her own activities as Supergirl. It’s a plot point that sounds good in principal until logic starts getting in the way.
For fans who stayed invested in the series from the first episode, this season was a fitting conclusion for a ride that wasn’t always smooth, but certainly eventful.

VIDEO/AUDIO
With a full 1080p full HD video and DTS-HD master audio for English 5.1, the video quality is impressive. It’s not reference quality, but you won’t have any issue with how it looks or sounds. This is basically the same high quality you could expect when watching the broadcast HD version.
BLU-RAY & DVD FEATURES
For the final season of a series, the special features seem a little underwhelming with the standard deleted scenes segment. Surprisingly there’s no gag reel and one segment devoted to Supergirl’s legacy.
