DC Comics reviews – Nightwing #90, The Flash #780
Nightwing #90
It doesn’t matter which character Tom Taylor gets his hands on. He’s going to write the character in the absolute best light. In Wally West’s case, The Flash by writer Jeremy Adams has been so good that Taylor doesn’t have to remind us how great The Flash is as a character. He simply shows why having the Fastest Man Alive watching your back when assassins are after you isn’t a bad thing.
Nightwing and Flash are one of the enduring friendships in the DCU. They’ve been tight pre-Crisis, through DC Rebirth and in the Infinite Frontier era. It’s refreshing to see a celebration of friendships in a way that’s been allowed to evolve yet the core dynamics of the bond remains intact.
Taylor gets that and writes the kind of dialogue Teen Titans Academy couldn’t provide due to the number of characters. As usual, Taylor makes these interactions fun with genuine emotion. And this carries over to Dick/Nightwing’s interactions with other characters as well.
The only downside to this issue was regular artist Bruno Redondo had to miss it. Geraldo Borges capably fills in, but Redondo has been operating at such a high level that it would have been amazing seeing him tackle this Dick and Wally team-up. On the positive front, Redondo is listed as the artist next issue so he won’t miss the entire team-up.
Adriano Lucas’ colors shine even brighter with Flash’s signature red and yellow added to the mix. Wes Abbott also finds clever ways to incorporate the lettering for the title as well.
Nightwing #90 might be missing one of its key collaborators, but it’s still a can’t miss issue of DC’s best ongoing title.
