Marvel Legends Baron Zemo review – Walgreens exclusive

A classic Marvel Legends Baron Zemo has been a seriously long overdue figure in my collection. I LOVE when a supervillain team unites to battle a hero squad.

Baron Zemo took some cues from his father, but realized there was no need to play fair and have a foe for each Avenger. Nope, Zemo decided he’d stack the deck by having a super size version of the Masters of Evil. If someone got beat down by Wasp and Paladin, they were expendable and Zemo still had plenty of backup.

As a huge fan of Under Siege, I’ve been looking forward to re-enacting that in Marvel Legends form. Getting the architect of this classic Avengers story gets me one step closer. Let’s see how Zemo turned out.

Packaging: Baron Zemo is the first of the 2022 exclusive Walgreens theme of Marvel Super Villains. It carries over the green yellow and deep purple of the Build-A-Figure Xenmu wave. That’s nice consistency.

The portrait of Zemo on the side and rear is striking and shows how a guy rocking furry shoulder pads can still look intimidating.

I dig the bio, which explains a decent amount about Zemo and his hatred of Captain America.

Likeness: With one weird exception, Baron Zemo looks like he stepped out of the pages of the Under Siege arc.

His head sculpt is fantastic with piercing eyes as if Zemo is getting annoyed. His eyes convey a lot, which is impressive for a masked portrait. Zemo’s mini crown is also well realized with the right size of the ear panels. This isn’t a reuse of the original Hasbro Zemo figure as the crown front is noticeably smaller.

Hasbro sculpted the collar piece instead of leaving it up to the paintjob. This was the right call given the lining as it would have been problematic relying on a good paint job like the modern Zemo figure.

Zemo’s fuzzy shoulder pads and boot cuffs turned out great. The sculpting does a nice job of conveying they’re fur and a different material from the mostly spandex attire.

The only add inclusion is the “handle” on Zemo’s big gaudy gold belt. I can’t find a reference for that and it’s definitely not part of Zemo’s classic outfit. Probably nothing a steady hand and tiny scissors can’t fix.

His arms are the same as the Dormammu figure though I can’t place his torso and legs.

Paint:  Zemo’s paintjob is thankfully problem-free. That’s one of the downfalls of ordering online for exclusive that are likely not to be plentiful on shelves. Fortunately, there’s no flaws on the figure. Even the spots from the fur trim are solid right down to some fading to show this is animal fur.

Hasbro didn’t get cute with the color scheme. The head and collar piece are more of a magenta while the majority of the body is a strong purple.  One nitpick is the belt should be the same yellow as the boots and not gold.

In most instances, Zemo’s boots also have the lining found on the gloves. The glove lining is fine so it’s curious that Hasbro didn’t carry the same technique to the boots.

marvel legends baron zemo review - scale with grey gargoyle, hercules, piledriver and captain america

Scale: Zemo has typically been portrayed as average height so he’s looking up to the 80th Anniversary Captain America. Thankfully he’s not so much shorter than Cap, who does look a bit too tall to some of the earlier Bucky Cap mold figures.

Zemo is taller than his previous figure and will definitely be looking up at the ridiculously oversized Absorbing Man, Wrecker and the Wrecking Crew. We need scaled down versions of them pronto.

Articulation: Baron Zemo doesn’t suffer from bad articulation. The shoulder pads don’t mess him up at all and he’s very easy to pose. He’s more of a schemer, but fully capable of duking it out with Captain America.

He’s more of a sword-wielding striker and he can hit a number of blocking and advancing poses without any problem.

Accessories:  Baron Zemo is real sparse on the accessory front.

He’s got swappable trigger hands to use for a gun that’s not included. Still, I appreciate the thought. He’s also got his sword.

This is the same one from the previous figure, but with a dark brown hilt that makes a big difference. This sword looks far less like a toy sword.

marvel legends baron zemo review - with the masters of evil

Worth it?  Baron Zemo is the standard $22.99 price tag. Finding Marvel Legends at Walgreens these days has been a losing proposition.

Thankfully their website has the ship to store option meaning I didn’t have to pay $28 for him. And with gas prices skyrocketing, avoiding the futile search in stores, this was a much better option.

Now does that make him worth $23? This price point is especially tougher for Marvel Legends that don’t have BAFs connected to them. Zemo is a character I like enough that I won’t quibble too much about the price, but I’m bargain hunting for most of the 2022 releases.

Rating: 9.8 out of 10

I’d like a few more accessories and that belt handle removed, but otherwise this is a great centerpiece for my Masters of Evil display.

Where to get it?  Baron Zemo is a Walgreens exclusive. To their credit, he’s been on the site for lengthy periods of time before selling out. Currently he’s out of stock again, but there’s the chance he’ll also show up in stores too.
