Morbius sucks out $40 million for debut weekend
Critics largely thought it bit, but Jared Leto’s vampire anti-hero Marvel film snatched the top spot at the box office.
This pales to Leto’s DC debut as The Joker in Suicide Squad, which bagged a strong $133 million.
Morbius isn’t exactly a top tier character and was going to rely on bored audiences eager for a superhero diversion. Preferably those who ignored Morbius’ abysmal 17% status on Rotten Tomatoes.
It didn’t help that Saturday featured a strong nightcap of March Madness Final Four action and the opening night of WrestleMania.
Morbius is fighting bad word of mouth so warning back its $75 million budget could be tough.
Last week’s champ, The Lost City, brought in $14.6 million. That’s just a little more than half of its $31 million opening.
The Batman added $11 million bringing it within range of $350 million by next week. Uncharted comes in at fourth with $3.7 million taking its domestic total to $139 million.
Sony also has the fifth spot with the anime, Jujutsu Kaisen 0, with another $2 million. This brings its total to $31 million.
