The Bad Guys make off with box office crown

Turns out The Bad Guys have it pretty good at the box office. The animated film from DreamWorks Animation snagged the top spot at the box office this weekend with a $24 million debut despite a slew of contenders.

It didn’t hurt that The Bad Guys was the sole new arrival that catered to families. Fellow newcomers The Northman and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, didn’t fare as well.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 zoomed along in its third weekend to grab the silver medal with $15.2 million to take its total to $145.8 million. In only three weeks, the sequel is closing in on the first installment’s total domestic gross of $148 million. That warrants an asterisk though since the first film opened in February 2020 just as the COVID pandemic began. Either way, Paramount Pictures has to be thrilled with the legs of this franchise.

There doesn’t seem to be much magic left in the Harry Potter franchise, or at least the Fantastic Beasts spin-off. The third chapter of that saga, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, managed a disappointing third place finish with $14 million after a soft $40 million opening last weekend.

The Northman debuted in fourth place with $12 million, which isn’t great considering its $90 million budget. Unbearable Weight buckled to a fifth-place debut with $7.1 million on a $30 million budget.
