Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of the Madness conjures 2022’s biggest opening

The doctor is in and he’s taking the box office crown for his latest trick.

Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of the Madness cast a spell on audiences bringing in $185 million in its opening weekend. That was good enough to knock out The Batman’s $134 million debut.

This is a massive improvement over the $85 million debut of the 2016 original Doctor Strange film. Clearly, Strange’s role in Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: No Way Home have significantly helped to raise his profile among Marvel Cinematic Universe fans.

Multiverse of the Madness is the best box office debut since No Way Home started breaking records with its Dec. 15 debut. No Way Home has gone on to be one of the all-time highest grossing domestic films trailing only Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($937 million) and Endgame ($858 million) with $805 million.

After a run of ruling the box office, The Bad Guys has to settle for the scraps with a $9.7 million third weekend. This brings the animated film is closing in on $57 million.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 raced toward third place with $6.2 million as it zooms past $169.9 million making it by far the most successful animated film in the pandemic era.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore brought in $3.8 million bringing its total to $86 million while Everything Everywhere All at Once nabbed fifth place for $3.3 million for a $41 million total.
