The doctor is in and he’s taking the box office crown for his latest trick.
Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of the Madness cast a spell on audiences bringing in $185 million in its opening weekend. That was good enough to knock out The Batman’s $134 million debut.
This is a massive improvement over the $85 million debut of the 2016 original Doctor Strange film. Clearly, Strange’s role in Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: No Way Home have significantly helped to raise his profile among Marvel Cinematic Universe fans.
Multiverse of the Madness is the best box office debut since No Way Home started breaking records with its Dec. 15 debut. No Way Home has gone on to be one of the all-time highest grossing domestic films trailing only Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($937 million) and Endgame ($858 million) with $805 million.
