DC Comics reviews 6/21/22 – Nightwing #93, The Flash #783
Dark Crisis Young Justice #1

One of the bigger disappointments in the last five years was the doomed from the start revival of Young Justice. Brian Michael Bendis had a cursory understanding of the characters but not enough to avoid horrible mischaracterizations and having Robin call himself Drake.
Bad news YJ fans, the Dark Crisis Young Justice isn’t a lot better.
I haven’t been of anything Meghan Fitzmartin has written so far and this issue doesn’t change that sentiment at all. Fitzmartin doesn’t seem overly familiar with Tim Drake or other DC characters and continues to write them horribly out of character.

After the death of the Justice League, the heroes of Young Justice bitterly reunite. Wonder Girl reminisces about their various bouts with death and Fitzmartin randomly throws in a One Year Later flashback. This is problematic since Fitzmartin can’t write characters consistent with their modern appearances to bother jumping into the cluttered mess of DC legacy continuity.
When Superboy, Robin and Impulse vanish, Wonder Girl starts a search for her missing pals.
Some of the dialogue is cruel and far harsher than what these characters would say even in a heavy grief period.
Here’s some examples:
- Wonder Girl: Half of us just died and I just wish that some of them had stayed dead.
- Arrowette: I don’t know what happened to the boys. They’re probably finding some horrible coping mechanisms to process their fake dads being dead.
- Flash: Cassie, I feel for you. I really do, but I don’t have time for teen angst.
Laura Braga’s art is mostly solid though there’s some weird gaffes like an extra Superboy helping on the Justice League statues. That sequence isn’t entirely clear either as Braga draws it more like the teens are just climbing the statue for kicks. Then there’s nerdier details like Blue Beetle and Booster Gold standing apart at the funeral service.
Luis Guerrero’s colors are a highlight with bold, lively colors fitting the more playful Young Justice series.
This was a sizable letdown on most fronts. Fitzmartin continues to struggle with portrayals of DC icons and Dark Crisis remains a continuity-convoluted event.
