It’s impressive in an era of constant big events jockeying for what’s the most important how a simple story can prove so much more effective.

This is the beauty of this run of Nightwing. In the grand scheme of comic book plots, Nightwing battling a corrupt police department under the thumb of Blockbuster while a heart-stealing serial killer on the loose isn’t the same as killing off a bunch of heroes, having heroes fight each other or destroying countless worlds. But writer Tom Taylor and artist Bruno Redondo make so endlessly great that it’s the best book going today.

After Haven’s debut was nearly ruined by some goons causing trouble, Nightwing faces off with some cops. Redondo draws this so smoothly it has a playful tone to the fight without being corny. Nightwing is a melee fighter capable of using anything at his disposal to defeat his opponents. This was another great example.

Taylor also takes the Dick Grayson/Barbara Gordon relationship to the next level. It’s been obvious, but actually having it play out made for a nice moment.

Heartless explains his plans to Blockbuster resulting in an unexpected outcome. Taylor lobs up these solid moments that Redondo absolutely knocks out of the park with his interpretation. Sure, it could be more dark and serious, but that’s not Nightwing. And there’s plenty of comics for that kind of superhero story. Nightwing is a lot more fun and enjoyable.

Other essential components to this collaboration are the fantastic coloring work from Adriano Lucas. Each panel is saturated in rich, captivating colors. Wes Abbott seems to have so much fun with the lettering that it’s obvious.

If you want a dramatic, depressingly bleak comic, Nightwing will never be for you. If you’re looking for a comic that’s overflowing with feel-good moments, there’s no need to look any further. Nightwing continues to be your best and most enjoyable bet.
