Ms. Marvel – Destined review S1 E3
Beyond Captain Marvel, it’s nice to see the sphere of Ms. Marvel is linked to offer corners of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Destined included a significant connection to Shang-Chi and a nod to Thor.
Kamran’s mother, Najma, explained how she and her fellow Jinn arrived on Earth and desperately have tried to return to their Noor world. Back in 1942, the group, the Clandestines, found a magical bracelet in a temple adorned with the 10 Rings logo.
Kamala’s great grandmother used the bracelet and got separated from the others. It wasn’t until Kamala activated the bracelet that Najma and the Clandestine realized Kamala’s great grandmother started a family and was still on Earth all this time.
Now the Clandestine need Kamala’s help to return home. That’s a lot to take in so Kamala goes to her personal genius BFF who might know something about inter dimensional travel, Bruno.
Turns out Bruno is somewhat familiar since he’s read some work from Dr. Erik Selvig. Nice touch with the Thor shout out and definitely an expert that Bruno would read about.
That mysterious agency running around last week was actually Damage Control. They’re starting to pop up more often in the MCU after making their debut in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
They’re at the mosque this week looking for leads on the Muslim superhero. Naturally, this worries Kamala since her friends and family are upset about a Muslim girl causing trouble.

It’s a tricky situation for Kamala since she wants to do good even while she’s unsure what that actually means. Bruno provides some guidance with a custom mask. That’s a step towards getting an actual costume even if that’s taking longer than I’d like at the halfway point in the series.
Amar and Tyesha’s wedding is an energetic and lively scene that we don’t normally see in superhero shows complete with a fun dance number.
Ms. Marvel is doing an outstanding job of making family life an asset to a superhero and not a problem that has to be a constant obstacle.
Still, we’re not here for great family moments. We need some action. That comes courtesy of Namja and the Clandestine crashing the reception to force Kamala into helping.
To not completely ruin the good time by having a fight break out, Kamala pulls the fire alarm to get everyone evacuated. Then she tries to escape on her own.
Kamala is probably acting in a realistic manner where she’s not suddenly some elite fighter, but I wish she had a bit more eagerness in playing the part of a hero. She’s got her wish fulfilled and is now acting like she wants nothing to do with it.
This is making Ms. Marvel the rare superhero show where the hero isn’t enjoying being a hero but the lead and supporting cast are so likable the fact that the main draw — superhero action — is underwhelming isn’t a dealbreaker.
Kamala’s fight with the Clandestines is more of a powered game of hide and seek. That results in another fight sequence that handles the obligation of providing some action without being a thrilling component of the episode. As Kamala and Najma face off they both have a vision of a train speeding at them.
Damage Control arrives and inadvertently helps Kamala and Bruno by neutralizing and arresting the Najma’s crew. To ensure they stay safe, Kamala uses her powers to seal the door.
Nakia saw what happened and isn’t thrilled her BFF would hold something this major from and yet Kamala still won’t tell her folks. They’re so understanding and cool that it’s causing a slight issue.
Before she can resolve those issues, Kamala gets a call from her grandmother who also saw the vision and wants Kamala to come to Karachi. Time for a field trip in what should be a fun excursion.
