DC Comics reviews 8/8/22 – DCeased War of Undead Gods #1

The Villainy of Our Fears arc wrapped with a mild whimper. This storyline has constantly felt like it was on the verge of eventually getting somewhere but that enthralling and exciting end point remained out of reach.

Writers Becky Cloonan and Michael W. Conrad couldn’t craft a conclusion worthy of the buildup. It felt like Dr. Cizko rallying a group of villains to take down Wonder Woman and her crew should have been more entertaining. Instead, the big showdowns made the villains come off more like irritants instead of genuine threats. Maybe there was a subtle message that Cizko and his women-bashing ilk, both real and fictional, back down with little trouble when confronted? That doesn’t make for a riveting resolution and casts doubts if this arc really needed to be so long.

Again, a plethora of artists collaborate on this issue. Emmanuela Lupacchino handles the majority of the art with assists from Jose Luis and Eduardo Pansica.

While the constant swapping out of artists in the same issue has gotten old it, has prevented delays that hold titles up in limbo for months.
And it doesn’t hurt that the art is solid throughout regardless of the artist. Tamra Bonvillain’s colors are warm and inviting.

This arc had potential putting Wonder Woman up against some of her most dangerous enemies. Unfortunately, it was another case where Diana largely just sits back while her allies, specifically Etta, do all the hard work.

I wish I were more optimistic about the direction of this title, but again it feels like it’s just spinning its wheels as Conrad and Cloonan continue vainly searching for some original unique approach to book readers.

This issue is a strong example of why that’s proving to be such a struggle.
