Image Comics reviews 9/14/22 – Do a Powerbomb #4

It’d probably be easier to just insert a Joey Styles gif than try and write a review for this fourth issue of Do a Powerbomb.

Writer/artist Daniel Warren Johnson is creating on a level that is sure to have wrestling fans who love comics marking out with this amazingly refreshing series that never is at a loss for fun.

The excitement starts early with Johnson having two montage segments for Sun and Stone and their latest opponents, Knights of Rhyne.

Johnson is writing and drawing like a creator with nothing to lose so he’s going all out almost as if he’s daring anyone to ruin the fun.

It’s not just the completely over the top manner in which Johnson conveys the larger-than-life wrestling scene, but the raw energy he provides on every page. Johnson’s art style is exactly what the story calls for with big bold in your face action sequences.

And Johnson’s love for wrestling is clear throughout, but this issue also had several nods to the Rocky franchise.

Mike Spicer’s colors keep everything together while bringing that extra visual oomph to give the action a larger than life feel.

This issue sets up a new rival for Sun and Stone using classic wrestling tropes. This title always ends with me having a big smile on my face over the mayhem and passion Johnson is bringing to this incredible series.
