Marvel Legends Vulcan – BAF Bonebreaker wave
One of the big mysteries raised in the 90s on the X-Men books was the third Summers brother. There were some intriguing candidates — Gambit’s got red eyes! X-Treme is extreme! — but ultimately the designation went to Vulcan. Who?
There was an interesting retcon in the X-Men books that Moira McTaggart trained four mutants and these four were the first Professor X sent to rescue his original X-Men on Krakoa. The most formidable was Vulcan, who led the team and became bitter over the years when he was restored from a lengthy stint of suspended animation.
Vulcan managed to cut the line of some more prominent, long-term X-Men overdue for their debut/updated figure so let’s see if this third Summers brother is worth the hype.
Packaging: David Nakayama takes care of the entire Build-A-Figure Bonebreaker packaging art. That’s great for consistency and also because Nakayama delivers the best artwork for the line.
Again, of note this wave has red accents instead of the typical X-Men yellow orange. The bio is OK but doesn’t explain Vulcan’s powers or the fact that Cyclops is his other brother, which is weird.
Also, last check, Vulcan is now a fully redeemed X-Man in good standing with the team.
Likeness: The big news with Vulcan is he’s the first to get the new standard buck for the Marvel Legends line. It’s a wider and a little thicker. His legs seem like they might be a bit too long.
Vulcan’s head sculpt is great. It’s got good intensity and I like the flow of his hair. He’s got a belt with a sculpted X, which looks pretty good.
Paint: Like his squad mate, Darwin, Vulcan incorporates navy blue in his costume. His attire is primarily cherry red.
I went through a few Vulcan figures before finding one with clean lining along the shoulders. If you’re able to, check that area out when choosing between the figures.
Scale: Vulcan is the tallest of his squad although now we’re “waiting” on Petra and Sway to join him and Darwin. He should still be right around the same height as Cyclops and Havok.

Articulation: Vulcan’s new buck features pinless joints. It’s a smooth base body and has all the expected ML levels of articulation.
Unlike some other molds with the pinless joints, Vulcan didn’t have that feeling of anything being too tight to the point it would break.
It was nice and solid allowing for some fun poses. This will be a great base model going forward.
Vulcan has:
- neck
- ball-jointed shoulders
- bicep
- elbow (double-jointed)
- wrist
- wrist hinge
- torso
- waist
- hip
- thigh
- knee (double-jointed)
- ankle
Accessories: This wave has been lean on accessories. Vulcan does come with the body and swappable fists of the Build-A-Figure Bonebreaker tank.
But he’s a character that really should have some new effect pieces especially as you factor in the new price tag.
Worth it? I got Vulcan on clearance for $8. Hard to beat that price point especially when this wave originally sold for $24.99.
Rating: 9 out of 10
Vulcan’s got a cool new buck, but he’s probably not a character I would have rushed to add to my Top 70 list. Bonebreaker was the attraction here and at least I got Vulcan for a terrific price.
Where to get it? Check your local Targets, which has this line up for clearance. Failing that, you can get him from Amazon or Entertainment Earth.
