Marvel Legends Maggott review – BAF Bonebreaker wave

Maggott was part of a very short-lived new group of X-Men. He had an interesting look and a weird power making his era one of the more unusual in X-Men lore. Thanks in large part to his very unusual power.

He’s not a figure I anticipated anytime soon though he is consistent with the Marvel Legends team getting distracted with starting a new team instead of finishing groups they’ve already started. The good news is his era of X-Men shouldn’t have to take long if Hasbro actually focuses on knocking them out.

Maggott is a cool addition to the line and a nice refresher from the predictable characters we’d seen as of late. Let’s see if he’ll burrow his way into my heart.

Packaging: David Nakayama takes care of the entire Build-A-Figure Bonebreaker packaging art and as usual, he delivers a terrific portrayal of Maggott.

The bio didn’t do a great job of explaining his power beyond mentioning Eanie and Meanie, his pet slugs, or his affiliation with the X-Men.

Likeness:  Maggott looks like the figure who received the most love and attention in this wave. He’s got the proper stature, girth and uniquely sculpted elements to look like his comic book counterpart.

His head sculpt is fantastic with the little tuft of hair in the front. Maggott’s sporting his usually happy expression with a wide, personable grin. His trench coat is accurate from the wide collar, various buttons along the shoulder pads and the bunched-up sleeves.

Hasbro gave the jacket a nice texture as well, which provides some emphasis on the armored shoulder pads.

Maggott has his fingerless gloves with open, clutching hands along with small glove cuffs. These are for his slug sidekicks. I can’t place the buck he’s using, but it might be an all-new (all-different?) mold.

His shirt isn’t sculpted, but I’ll cut them a break since everything else is spot on. Maggott’s belt buckle is correct and his pants also have nice texture in addition to his studded kneepads and boots.

Paint:  Maggott’s paint degree of difficulty is a bit higher thanks to the whites and yellows, which are notoriously tricky. The white of his hair is a different shade with a little grey touched in.

His shirt is a vibrant shade of white. His jacket’s yellow doesn’t have much bleeding, but there’s a little bit of sloppiness around the sleeves.

The only gripe with the paint is Maggott’s jacket collar should be yellow to match the cuffs and buttons. I dig the magenta shade of the gloves and his pants. More precise details like the teeth, the darker shade of blue on his lips and the two tones of his red eyes.

Scale: Maggott wasn’t just a bruiser, but he was the bigger, thicker member of his team with no Colossus around.

Articulation: Maggott’s new buck features pinless joints. He moves just fine. The jacket doesn’t restrict his movement too much although Maggott is more of a distance fighter despite his intimidating size.

It’s more about Eanie and Meanie anyway. His shoulder pads are soft enough to not hinder raising the arms although there’s a hole in the robe that is too visible when it’s raised too high.

Maggott has:

Accessories:  While most of the figures in this wave have been lacking on accessories, Maggott actually has a decent amount — or at least the most sensible.

He’s got his slug pals, Eanie and Meanie, who are sculpted to drape over his shoulders in various positions.

The detail work on them is pretty good — they’ve got that metallic Slinky type exterior and the inner portion has grooves and teeth(?) claws(?). Their eyes weren’t neglected either and it shows what Hasbro is capable of when putting forth maximum effort on unique accessories since they clearly can’t be reused.

Of course, I say this, and Hasbro forgets one of the distinguishing elements to Maggott — his glasses. Sure, there’s plenty of scenes where Maggott is showing off his red eyes, but the glasses are part of his signature look and a little surprising with their omission.

Additionally, he comes with the head and machine gun for the Build-A-Figure Bonebreaker.

Worth it?  I was able to wait it out and get Maggott on clearance for $12. Of the wave, Maggott is the easiest to argue he’s worth the standard $24.99 given all the extra detail and sculpting but getting him for half off is a great deal.

Maggott was a lot of fun and a really cool addition to the line. Hopefully Marrow and Cecile Reyes get made soon so his era of the X-Men are covered in Marvel Legends.
