Stargirl – Frenemies Chapter Nine: The Monsters review
After a pair of episodes that more closed a storyline loop, The Monsters resumed the main plot and it delivered above expectations.
Courtney and Yolanda make up. Brec Bassinger and Yvette Montreal have actually chemistry and believably act like best friends, which adds so much to their interactions.
They make up and now Courtney wants to tell Cameron about her secret identity. Rick doesn’t think it’s a good idea. “I’ve got your back but don’t say I didn’t try and warn you.” It’s surprising the others haven’t noticed these dramatic emotional highs and lows he’s having since ‘fixing’ his hourglass.
Cameron’s art teacher Me. Dissenger visits the home, and the ironically hotheaded Grandma Lily kills him with an icicle. This is why teachers just can’t get invested in their students anymore.
Pat is worried he’s becoming like his father by keeping Mike away from his mother, who abandoned them. Barb has some pent up energy to release. Both find a listening ear in their BFFs Crock and Paula.
They’ve done little suspicious this season, but Crock and Paula almost seem a little too good to be true as such reliable— and admittedly—rough friends.
Mike and Jakeem break into Cindy’s locker and find a location that both Pat and Cindy have on their lists, only neither seems to have investigated this mysterious farm yet.
Beth figures out the signal Sylvester is chasing finally bounced back to its origin — the Mahkent house. Just as Courtney is about to confess what happened as Lily eavesdrops, Hourman bursts through.
Stargirl constantly delivers well-choreographed, fight scenes in various stages. Wildcat fights Lily while Hourman battles Cameron. Seeing their ice powers in effect really shows how dangerous an ice user can be in close quarter combat.
Lily seized the moment to tell Cameron the JSA killed his father. Uh-oh.
Beth’s dad helps her utilize the battle mode of her goggles helping her to hold her own against Cameron’s grandfather Sofus. At least long enough until Artemis can come in for the assist.
That fight takes its toll on Sofus as he has a heart attack after begging Cameron not to become like his father and turn to hate an anger. Embrace love. Beth is able to defibrillate Sofus but it’s unclear if he survived. It’s a traumatic fight for all parties and would have been a fine way to end the season’s best episode so far.
Instead we get a “post-credit” with Mike, Jakeem and the Thunderbolt exploring the farm and being scared off by…The Ultra Humanite?!? Man, Stargirl just keeps giving and giving. That was unexpected and terrific cliffhanger as we head to the final arc of the season.
