DC Comics reviews 1/10/23 – The Flash #790, Lazarus Planet: Alpha #1

So far writer Matthew Rosenberg has done a commendable job of making this series stand out from other team books. The wet works nature of WildCATS is making for an unpredictable and unique reading experience.

This issue finds the team meeting its public facing counterparts — The Seven Soldiers of Victory. In a fun breakdown, most of the WildCATS know the members of SSOV and aren’t impressed.

Cole takes advantage of some spare time to track down a lead on a weird bird cult in Gotham when he’s called into action to help the others rescue a hostage whose death could trigger a crisis-level event.

Rosenberg is showing a nice handle on the team dynamics making for some engaging interplay.

Artist Stephen Segovia shows a steady command of the characters. It’s the little things like how they’re posed in the background or their very distinct fighting styles. Segovia is proving to be an excellent choice of artists for this title.

WildCATS really is playing out like a different kind of team book than the current DC landscape is able to provide.

So long as it remains a unique voice in the greater DCU, WildCATS should remain a compelling read.
