DC Comics reviews 1/10/23 – The Flash #790, Lazarus Planet: Alpha #1

Before the Storm continues playing out as Yara Flor teams up with Diana to confront Eros.

Writers Michael W. Conrad and Becky Cloonan tend to have decent ideas for story arcs, but this is another example where their weak dialogue undermines a potentially thrilling scenario.

Most of the issue focuses on Eros taunting Yara and Diana. Then Yara getting frustrated and striking him repeatedly. It’s not exactly the most riveting showdown since Eros really isn’t fighting back. He’s content more to warn them of the dangers of not aligning with Hera and the potential fall of the gods.

Siggy and Trevor go after Eros’ ally, Hyperion, which should feel like more of a mismatch. Instead Hyperion comes off like a minor level nuisance instead of any kind of threat.

Artist Amancay Nahuelpan brings a lively, energetic flow to the pages with dramatic poses and expressions. Sometimes the characters look too intense for the moment but that’s preferable to them not showing any emotion.

Colorist Tamra Bonvillain utilizes a warm palette with darker oranges and yellows that’s inviting and pleasing to the eye.

Conrad and Cloonan end the issue with an interesting cliffhanger, but as always with their run it’s more a matter of them delivering a satisfying resolution that will determine if this arc proves memorable or entertaining.
