Angela Bassett headlines Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Academy Award nominations

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever made history for Marvel Studios. Angela Bassett was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her memorable turn as Queen Ramonda.

Bassett’s nomination is the first for a Marvel Cinematic Universe performance. This is Bassett’s second Academy Award nomination as she previously earned the accoladed back in 1994 for What’s Love Got to Do With It?

Bassett seems like the presumptive favorite to take home the Oscar as she’s already claimed the African American Critics Association, Black Film Critics Circle Award, Capri, Critics Choice and Golden Globes among others for her performance.

While Bassett is poised to make MCU history in addition to landing her first Oscar, Wakanda Forever also landed nominations for the following:

  • Best Costume Design (Ruth Carter) — Carter won the Oscar previously for her work on Black Panther.
  • Best Makeup and Hairstyling (Camille Friend and Joel Harlow)
  • Best Music [Original Song] – Lift Me Up (Rihanna)
  • Best Visual Effects – Geoffrey Baumann, Craig Hammack, R. Christopher White and Dan Sudick

The Academy Awards will air March 12.
