DC Comics reviews 1/24/23 – The Human Target #11, Justice Society of America #2
Detective Comics #1068
Gotham Nocturne plays on with Batman in an unfamiliar position of playing catch up. He’s not ahead of the situation and is in more reactive mode than in control against an enemy he’s ill-prepared to properly face. There could be some help just in the distance, but Harvey Dent has to strike a compromise with Two-Face and give up the last secret he holds dear.
Writer Ram V is juggling several storylines within Gotham Nocturne, but nothing feels so overwhelming that he’s losing his way. The story and subplots are still flowing logically and it’s so much more enjoyable having Batman at a loss, devising a temporarily winning strategy only to learn he’s still far behind his adversaries.
The Two-Face dynamic was also very entertaining. Ram V gets how to play up the dual nature of Harvey Dent making for a fascinating morality play.

Ivan Reis and Rafael Albuquerque tag teamed on the art this issue. While their styles aren’t necessarily complementary to each other, playing to their strengths allow for a visually cohesive story especially during the action scenes.
Dave Stewart’s colors and Danny Miki’s inks finish off the smooth presentation with rich, yet subdued colors and crisp linework.
It feels like whenever a new creative team comes aboard Batman they have all these grand statements about doing something different and shaking things up. So far, the Detective Comics crew is making good on their promise and delivering a sensationally unpredictable Batman arc.
