Lazarus Planet We Once Were Gods #1

Lazarus Planet has basically just gotten started, and it’s already had two standalone anthologies. It’s making for a somewhat unfocused big event as the foundation hasn’t been fully laid before dovetailing into these smaller stories that feel like table setting than rolling out this huge story.

We Once Were Gods focuses on many of the DC heavy hitters with stories featuring Aquaman, Martian Manhunter & Superman, Wonder Woman and Shazam.

Wonder Woman’s story by Phillip Kennedy Johnson with art from Jack Herbert and colors by Alex Guimaraes is one of the more interesting as it teases a compelling threat coming to the Amazons.

The other major story featured a Shazam (Mary Marvel) team-up with Black Adam (Malik) as Mary attempts to rescue her brother, Billy. Josie Campbell, who wrote The New Champion of Shazam, gets to continue her take on Mary Marvel. The pairing with Malik felt fresh and something that Campbell should explore further in subsequent stories. Caitlin Yarsky’s artwork was fun and fit the tone of the story perfectly.

In an anthology anomaly, none of the stories were underwhelming and were solid reads. Nothing seems especially major for the Lazarus Planet event, but it won’t feel like a waste of money or the time reading it.
