Stargirl The Lost Children #4
Geoff Johns has crafted a fun mystery with The Lost Children. After the initial clunky introduction of so many offspring and sidekicks to the Golden Age heroes, Johns has the story flowing in a far more natural manner.
One where he can incorporate the character’s diverse personalities in a more seamless way and still give them time to stand out.
Stargirl and Red Arrow serve as the reader avatars while navigating two very different challenges. Stargirl and Wing are trying to get the Time Master Corky to aid them in taking down Childminder’s boss. Red Arrow is trying to motivate Judy Garrick as both are imprisoned.
Todd Nauck’s art is such a tremendous fit for this title. He draws the heroes appropriately youthful with lanky limbs and slightly exaggerated proportions to show those awkward pre-teen/teen years.
Nauck also has a strong sense of setting the drama particularly with the Childminder scenes and the big payoff to her boss. Colorist Matt Herms brings a bright vibrant color palette that ideally matches the tone of this series.
Johns establishes a solid way to incorporate these new heroes into the universe. DC continuity is so fluid and wonky right now that this actually feels like there’s a plan. The boss’ reveal is exciting and shows how layered Johns is making this new direction for the Golden Age.
