Dark Horse reviews 3/15/23 – White Savior #3

Writers Eric Nguyen and Scott Burman don’t let up from the wild ride that’s been White Savior for its penultimate issue.

Todd is still trying to piece together all of the bizarre scenarios that have brought him to the village of the Inoki Village hours before their scheduled clash with the Akuno Clan.

Dark Horse - white savior #3 review

The more pressing concern now is Nathan Garin, the white savior that was going to lead the village to imminent death, has fallen (into an axe), to his death.

Now it’s up to Todd and Maggie, Todd’s fellow time displaced ally, to prevent the villagers from learning Nathan’s fate while keeping them from dying at the hands of the Akuno Clan and their mighty warrior The Wall.

Nguyen and Burman write the series fully tongue in cheek with random references to things like Subway drive-thrus, Weekend at Bernie’s and Guy Feiri as Batman.

Their writing style isn’t going to be for everyone particularly readers who fail to grasp the irony of the premise especially Maggie’s remark of what makes a white savior and Todd’s experience with reverse racism.

The dialogue is clearly not intended to be taken seriously with the plethora of editor’s notes and constant breaking of the fourth wall.

Nguyen‘s art style is not the most detailed, but he tells an easy story to follow visually with a nice flair for dramatics.

The color work from Iwan Joko Triyono provides a very smooth aesthetically pleasing flow to the artwork, which is further complemented by the creative lettering from Micah Myers.

White Savior hasn’t lost its irreverent tone without feeling like a formula that’s running on borrowed time.
