DC Comics reviews 3/21/23 – Superman #2, The Flash #795

Batman Superman World’s Finest #13

Every month, DC readers can look forward to some titles never letting them down and always delivering consistently great stories. There’s Nightwing, The Flash and of course Batman Superman World’s Finest. This issue was another example of why this title is such an elite read and a book you share with your friends who say comic books aren’t as good as they used to be anymore.

What always stands out is writer Mark Waid’s appreciation for the larger DC Universe in general. Waid constantly finds ways to work in other characters to the story whether in supporting roles or brief cameos just for fun. There’s a bit of both this issue as Simon Stagg is dead and Batman, Robin and Superman try to track down the killer.

Waid brings Jimmy Olsen to the forefront as Clark Kent’s Robin in this story while Batman confronts a viable if unlikely suspect in his Outsiders ally Metamorpho.

In retelling the origin of Metamorpho, artist Dan Mora taps into some unexpectedly strong horror elements reflecting the more terrifying nature of Rex Mason’s journey to become the Elemental Man. As usual, Mora’s artwork proves just as strong as the writing with the personality he provides to every character. Mora finds creative ways to showcase Superman’s powers and the colors from Tamra Bonvillain are bright and cheery to stay in tone with the Silver Age feel of the title.

Waid throws in a nice twist with Stagg’s alleged murderer, which sets up what should be another tremendously fun arc. This book hasn’t disappointed yet and it’s just going to be a long wait for the next installment.
