Milestone 30th Anniversary Special #1

For this anniversary special, Milestone celebrates the past, present and future of the brand that revolutionized comics in 1993. The main story from writer Evan Narcisse and artists Atagun Ilhan and ChrisCross, definitely hits the sweet nostalgia spot for readers who’ve been fans since Day 1.

The 1993 versions of the Milestone characters interact with their 2023 counterparts. What really stood out was how much more fleshed out and interesting the 93 version of Blood Syndicate was compared to the modern take, which lacks the edge, attitude and authentic tone of the original. The universes collide in somewhat of a convoluted nature, but it makes for good interactions between the characters. Ilhan’s art is effective, if a little choppy at times while ChrisCross’ art is as strong as ever. At times there’s not enough distinction from the classic and modern costumes to distinguish the origins of particular characters.

There’s not much a big menace in this storyline either, but it’s really all about the characters interacting and that more than makes up for a weak villain.

Other stories feature an older Static teaming with Batman Beyond written and drawn by Milestone rising star Nikolas Draper-Ivey, Rocket now evolved to the role of Icon and a glimpse at the future of the Blood Syndicate with the return of another Milestone team teased.

Overall, this was a solid celebration of all things Milestone though it probably could have teased a few more upcoming events like Icon vs. Hardware and Static Season 2.
